Entonces he decidido mandarla a Blip.fm. Como tengo mi cuenta sincronizada con Twitter, ha salido en mi timeline. En esta ocasión nos vamos hasta 1982 y el disco Hot Space para recuperar una canción que pone de manifiesto aquello de que el estrés inunda nuestras calles. Pero algunos trabajamos mejor bajo presión (que se lo digan a los integrantes de la estación espacial internacional, que suelen escuchar este tema de Queen…). Esta vez la recomendación viene de la mano de Halston y Manuel.

Manuel:

Sin ningún genero de duda, mi canción preferida de Queen es “Under pressure”. De los muchos símbolos musicales que dejó este grupo, creo que el sampling inicial de bajo es de lo mejor de la reina. También contribuye la presencia de Bowie, que aunque no es santo de mi devoción, da la impresión que en la grabación de esta canción, había magia y genialidad brotando de cada nota. Además en conjunto me parece una canción arriesgada, nada convencional y hermosa (cualidades nada ajenas a casi ninguna canción de Queen).

Destaco así mismo una versión en directo de David Bowie con Annie Lennox en un homenaje a Mercury. Dos gigantes engranados en una canción que les quedaba como un guante. ¡Para morirse!

Halston:

A mí me agradaría que publicaran la canción de UNDER PRESSURE con Freddie Mercury y David Bowie. Esta canción la escuché en la época que era estudiante en la universidad y me ayudaba a aguantar las noches de desvelo.

Aquí va una recomendación de un grupo un poco “extraño”. Uno de esos que tienen una canción que rápidamente se hace famosa y, por qué no decirlo, que es bastante buena para lo que hay por el mundo musical, con influencias de The Clash o los Pixies. Una canción simplona pero muy efectiva y positiva para cantar muy alto.

Yo conocí esta melodía gracias a la fantástica banda sonora de la película Romeo y Julieta (la versión moderna de Claire Danes y Leonardo Di Caprio).

Termina el fin de semana y para salir de la locura del fatídico electro/dance que te abruma la mente maliciosamente es que recomiendo esta poesía (no la puedo reducir a canción) del querido Thom Yorke. Street Spirit (Fade Out) es un sencillo de Radiohead publicado en 1996 y la canción final del álbum The Bends.

El vocalista dijo que la letra de la canción está inspirada en la novela El camino hambriento del escritor nigeriano Ben Okri (1991). Radiohead atribuye a la canción un alto grado de profundidad, más allá del percibido normalmente por la audiencia. Thom Yorke, refiriéndose a ella, expresó: “Representa toda la emoción trágica. Es tan doloroso, que el sonido de esa melodía es su única definición.

También tenéis una versión más rockera de la mano de The Darkness.

Hotel California es una canción de los Eagles del álbum del mismo nombre que vio la luz en 1977. Su temática, 31 años después es plenamente vigente. Mucho se ha comentado sobre lo que verdaderamente quiere decir la letra de esta canción, su ambigüedad permite múltiples interpretaciones pero los autores de la canción confirmaron que sus versos nos hablan del exceso y el materialismo, es de hecho una alegoría sobre el hedonismo y la autodestrucción. Se eligió la palabra California por ser el microcosmos perfecto donde se daban estas circunstancias, pero es perfectamente extrapolable al resto del EE.UU y el mundo.

Si seguimos la letra, nos vamos dando cuenta que cada vez se hace más oscura y perturbadora, así el protagonista llega un lugar que bien puede ser el cielo o el infierno (this could be heaven or this could be hell) y se encuentra con una mujer que vive en el lujo (her mind is Tiffany twisted, por los diamentes) o (she got a Mercedes Benz).

Ella misma confirma más adelante todos son prisioneros de su propio ansia materialista/egoísta (we are all just prisioners here of our own device) y la que probablemente es su línea más famosa (you can checkout any time you like but you can never leave), que nos habla de lo difícil que es salir de esa espiral: «podrás desapuntarte cuando quieras pero nunca podrás irte». Como curiosidad la cita House en uno de los capítulos de la cuarta temporada.

Además de tener muchísimo mensaje, la melodía, la guitarra del inicio/final son toda una demostración de virtuosismo. A mí que nunca he tocado una cuerda de guitarra me dan ganas de coger una y «destrozar» los acordes.

Como última cosilla si alguien me dice a qué se refiere con la palabra «colitas» (es castellano), que Lorena le de triple tanto de palabra. (Y no vale «preguntar» a Google).

Pues ahí queda el reto… Por cierto, atención a la guitarrita que gastan en este vídeo:
